UPDATE! I knew this bass had never been taken apart. Reluctantly, I removed the control plate to take extra pics. It was such a tight fit I had to shimmy it out! The electronics and interior were in pristine condition. I was able to read the date code on one of the pots and to my astonishment, it read 2691 for 26th week of 1991. That struck me as odd because the last El Toro was supposedly produced in 1987. So I just had to take the neck off to investigate further. Indeed, the neck and body show markings that this may have been a special request or a custom order. They are dated 8/13 and 8/6 respectively so this coincides perfectly with the mid-July pot dates! I'm hanging onto this until I can research things a bit further but it's quite intriguing to say the least.
With less than 150 produced the El Toro is arguably a bit scarcer than the Interceptor although I don't mind having both in my collection! This one is ultra-clean with no distracting marks and a vibrant 3-tone sunburst finish. It's a little slimmer than L1000 and L2000 models with a narrower neck. It also sports unique soapbar mini-humbuckers each with 16 adjustable pole pieces. The electronics are the same as found in the L2000 but the special pickups give this bass a unique tone of its own. The neck is perfect with fabulous 3-D figured maple and the frets look untouched but the bass plays and sounds fantastic. It's meant to be played! Weighs about 9 1/2 lbs and comes in the original tolex hard case with plush brown lining.
